How do we live with hope when the world’s problems feel overwhelming?
Join Denver Institute for a conversation with author, teacher, and longtime friend of our community Steven Garber as we explore themes from his new book Hints of Hope: Essays on Making Peace with the Proximate. Through conversation, reflection, and dialogue with one another, we’ll consider what it means to cultivate resilient hope in the midst of the real pressures, limits, and possibilities of our everyday lives.
At the heart of the book is the idea of the “proximate”—a word from the Latin proximatus, meaning “to draw near.” Garber invites us to draw near to the deepest realities of life and to see with greater clarity and compassion—recognizing what is true, right, and beautiful in the world even as we face the suffering all around us. Rather than imagining we can fix everything, we are called to embrace the faithful work right in front of us: the people, places, institutions, and responsibilities entrusted to our care.
Hints of Hope probes what it means to be human—to wrestle with the contradictions we face in our marriages, our workplaces, our friendships, and our vocations. We all experience beauty and brokenness, wonder and despair, joy and sorrow. We live with disappointment and grief, wanting more and expecting more, yet never fully satisfied. Paradoxically, as we make peace with the proximate, our vision expands to notice the glimmers of beauty and grace that thread through our ordinary lives—those quiet hints of hope that sustain us in a world stretched taut between what is and what someday will be.
The event will include a live interview with Steve Garber, time for audience Q&A, and guided moments of reflection and conversation at your table, creating space to connect the ideas of the book with the realities of your own life.
