Faithful Uncertainty: A Conversation with James K.A. Smith

Event details

How do we find our footing when the light fades and the path ahead becomes blurred?

Join Denver Institute and Denver Seminary for an evening hosted by Platt Park Church with philosopher and author James K.A. Smith. We will explore the themes of his newest book, Make Your Home in This Luminous Dark. In a world that often demands absolute certainty and quick answers, Smith invites us into a different way of being—one that recognizes the "luminous dark" as a place not of despair, but of deep formation and God’s presence.

Drawing on the richness of the Christian mystical writers like Teresa of Ávila, Thomas Merton, and Henri Nouwen, Smith suggests that our limits and our "not-knowing" are not obstacles to be overcome, but conditions to be embraced. He challenges the modern urge to master our surroundings through sheer information, offering instead a vision of "faithful uncertainty." Through this lens, we learn to navigate the complexities of our vocations, our relationships, and our faith, recognizing that we are often most found by God when we feel most lost. This is a call to move beyond the exhaustion of needing to have it all figured out, and toward the quiet grace of being known.

The event will include a live interview with James K.A. Smith, time for audience Q&A, and guided moments of reflection and conversation at your table, creating space to connect the ideas of the book with the realities of your own life.
